CWE-916

Allowed

Use of Password Hash With Insufficient Computational Effort

Abstraction: Base · Status: Incomplete

The product generates a hash for a password, but it uses a scheme that does not provide a sufficient level of computational effort that would make password cracking attacks infeasible or expensive.

Title
FrontAccounting < 2.4.20 SQL Injection via rep601.php
Summary
FrontAccounting before 2.4.20 contains a SQL injection vulnerability in the Bank Statement report handler that allows authenticated attackers to extract arbitrary database data by injecting UNION SELECT payloads into the PARAM_0 POST parameter. Attackers can supply malicious SQL syntax through the unparameterized WHERE clause to retrieve sensitive information including usernames, password hashes, and email addresses from the users table, rendered into PDF report output.

Title
RustDesk Auth Proof Uses Server-Controlled Salt/Challenge and Fast Double-SHA256, Enabling Offline Brute-Force
Summary
Use of Password Hash With Insufficient Computational Effort, Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts vulnerability in rustdesk-client RustDesk Client rustdesk-client on Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android (Client login, peer authentication modules) allows Password Brute Forcing. The authentication proof is SHA256(SHA256(password + salt) + challenge), where both the salt and the challenge are generated entirely by the server with no client-side nonce, and the hash uses no slow key-derivation function. A rogue or on-path API/relay server (see CVE-2026-30794 / CVE-2026-30797) can issue a chosen salt and challenge, capture the resulting proof, and recover the password offline. The capture-replay claim (CWE-294) is withdrawn: the challenge is regenerated per connection (challenge = Config::get_auto_password(6)), so a captured proof is not replayable against the legitimate server. The 1.4.7 OTP brute-force limiter and the existing LOGIN_FAILURES counter constrain only ONLINE attempts and do not address offline recovery. This vulnerability is associated with program files src/client.rs and program routines handle_hash(), handle_login_from_ui() (login proof construction). This issue affects RustDesk Client: through 1.4.8.

Title
QloApps 1.7.0 Weak Password Hashing via MD5 in Tools.php
Summary
QloApps through 1.7.0, fixed in commit 64e9722, contains a weak cryptographic algorithm vulnerability that allows attackers to compromise user credentials by exploiting the use of MD5 for password hashing in the Tools::encrypt() function within classes/Tools.php, which concatenates a static cookie key with the supplied password. Attackers can perform offline brute-force attacks against the MD5 hashes, with the risk compounded by auto-generated 8-character passwords assigned during guest-to-customer account conversion in classes/Customer.php, making credential recovery trivial.

Title
Crypt::PBKDF2 versions before 0.261630 for Perl have a weak default algorithm and number of iterations
Summary
Crypt::PBKDF2 versions before 0.261630 for Perl have a weak default algorithm and number of iterations. The default algorithm is HMAC-SHA1, which should only be used for legacy systems. These versions default to using 1000 iterations. Depending on the chosen algorithm, 220,000 to 1,400,000 iterations should be used.

Title
Weak Password Hashing Mechanism in TP-Link Deco M5
Summary
TP-Link Deco M5 v1 uses a weak password hashing mechanism to store user credentials. An attacker who obtains the password hash through system compromise or privileged access could perform brute-force or dictionary attacks. Successful exploitation may result in disclosure of authentication credentials, enabling unauthorized access to device management functions, depending on the privileges associated with the recovered password. The primary security impact is loss of confidentiality.

CVE-2026-0857 (GCVE-0-2026-0857)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-05-20 10:50 – Updated: 2026-09-25 14:23
VLAI
Summary
Use of a Password Hash With Insufficient Computational Effort in Mesalvo MEONA (MEONA Server and MEONA Client) for user accounts whose password was last set under a version before MEONA 2024.10. MEONA versions before 2024.10 protected stored passwords with SHA-1 (versions from October 2015) or stored them without protection (earlier versions). Since MEONA 2024.10 (June 2024) Argon2 is the default method and every password that is set or changed is stored with Argon2; passwords last set under an earlier version keep the earlier method until they are changed. An administrator could in addition select the storage method per account. A MEONA super administrator can read the stored value of such accounts in the user administration of the MEONA Client or export it through administrative database functions. Only accounts managed locally in MEONA are affected; accounts authenticated through the operating hospital's directory service (Active Directory / Entra ID) have no password stored in MEONA. In typical installations end users authenticate through the directory service and local accounts are limited to emergency and technical accounts. Exploitation requires super administrator permissions in MEONA (or direct access to the MEONA database) from within the operating hospital's network; MEONA is operated exclusively within closed hospital networks without exposure to the public Internet, and where a hospital permits remote access to that network at all, it is only through the hospital's own remote-access infrastructure (e.g. VPN) under the hospital's control. Installations in which every password has been set or changed under MEONA 2024.10 or later are not affected. Mesalvo is not aware of any exploitation outside the reported security test. This issue affects MEONA Server and MEONA Client in versions 2024.10, 2025.04 and 2026.03 (for accounts with passwords last set under earlier versions). MEONA 2025.04.24 and 2026.03.02 (planned Q4 2026) remove the legacy storage methods, require every affected account to set a new Argon2-protected password at next logon, and no longer display stored credential values in the user administration. See Mesalvo Security Advisory MSA-2026-002.

Mitigation MIT-51
Architecture and Design
  • Use an adaptive hash function that can be configured to change the amount of computational effort needed to compute the hash, such as the number of iterations ("stretching") or the amount of memory required. Some hash functions perform salting automatically. These functions can significantly increase the overhead for a brute force attack compared to intentionally-fast functions such as MD5. For example, rainbow table attacks can become infeasible due to the high computing overhead. Finally, since computing power gets faster and cheaper over time, the technique can be reconfigured to increase the workload without forcing an entire replacement of the algorithm in use.
  • Some hash functions that have one or more of these desired properties include bcrypt [REF-291], scrypt [REF-292], and PBKDF2 [REF-293]. While there is active debate about which of these is the most effective, they are all stronger than using salts with hash functions with very little computing overhead.
  • Note that using these functions can have an impact on performance, so they require special consideration to avoid denial-of-service attacks. However, their configurability provides finer control over how much CPU and memory is used, so it could be adjusted to suit the environment's needs.
Mitigation MIT-25
Implementation Architecture and Design

When using industry-approved techniques, use them correctly. Don't cut corners by skipping resource-intensive steps (CWE-325). These steps are often essential for preventing common attacks.
