CWE-789

Allowed

Memory Allocation with Excessive Size Value

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft

The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated.

CVE-2026-85201 (GCVE-0-2026-85201)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-09-07 10:01 – Updated: 2026-09-08 15:06
VLAI
Summary
In Eclipse Ankaios versions 0.1.0 through 1.0.1, the agent does not limit the length declared by a workload in a length-delimited protobuf message received through the Control Interface FIFO. A workload granted Control Interface access can specify an excessive message length, causing an unbounded memory allocation that may abort the Ankaios agent process. This results in loss of orchestration services for workloads managed by the affected agent.

CVE-2026-83745 (GCVE-0-2026-83745)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2026-10-02 12:16 – Updated: 2026-10-02 17:16

Title
Apache Thrift, Apache Thrift: WebSocket frame decoders allocate the payload buffer from the declared length, not the bytes received (Node.js, D)
Summary
Memory allocation with excessive size value, Improper handling of length parameter inconsistency vulnerability in Apache Thrift  nodejs and D lang bindings. Both bindings' WebSocket server transports read the payload length out of the frame header and allocate that many bytes immediately, without checking that the bytes have arrived. A single ~14-byte frame therefore commits as much memory as it cares to declare -- measured at 513 MiB against the Node.js server and 2 GiB against the D transport -- and in the Node.js case the connection is left open afterwards, so the frame can simply be sent again. This issue affects Apache Thrift before 0.25.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 0.25.0, which fixes the issue.

Title
Uncontrolled Memory Allocation in cel-go
Summary
A user could provide an expression whose string length is longer than the ParserExpressionSizeLimit() configured on the CEL environment, and a memory allocation would occur proportional to the size of the input before the limit would be checked / enforced.

Title
Apache Storm Worker: Unauthenticated Remote Memory Exhaustion in the Worker Messaging Decoder
Summary
Description The worker's Netty message decoder is installed ahead of the SASL authentication handlers in the pipeline and acts on frames before any authentication has taken place. It allocated buffers sized from a length field carried in the frame, so a single frame from an unauthenticated peer able to reach a worker slot port could drive a large allocation. `storm.messaging.netty.authentication` defaults to false, and the decoder runs before the handler that enforces it in any case, so no credentials are required. The attacker needs only TCP reachability to a worker port. The effect of a single frame at the default 768 MB worker heap has not been measured to distinguish sustained worker loss from transient garbage-collection pressure. The severity assigned to this advisory reflects the more conservative reading; consumers who require a precise figure should test against their own worker heap configuration. Mitigation Upgrade to 3.1.0, where frames are decoded only after the handshake completes. Users who cannot upgrade immediately should ensure that worker slot ports are reachable only from within the cluster, as the security model already recommends, and should enable `storm.messaging.netty.authentication` where the deployment permits it. Title
openssl_encrypt before 1.4.9 Denial of Service via QR total field
Summary
openssl_encrypt before 1.4.9 fails to validate the total field from QR JSON payloads before materializing ranges. Attackers can supply crafted QR images with extremely large total values to trigger unbounded memory allocation and cause denial of service through out-of-memory conditions.

CVE-2026-81692 (GCVE-0-2026-81692)

Title
openssl_encrypt before 1.4.9 Denial of Service via STREAMINFO
Summary
openssl_encrypt (pip: openssl-encrypt) versions 1.4.8 and earlier fail to validate the 36-bit STREAMINFO total_samples field of FLAC files before using it to size an allocation (np.random.randint(size=(total_samples, channels))). A ~50-byte crafted FLAC file declaring ~100 million samples causes a multi-gigabyte memory allocation, leading to out-of-memory denial of service during 'decrypt --stego-extract'. The issue is fixed in 1.4.9; both the 1.4.x and 1.5.x lines are affected.

Mitigation
Implementation Architecture and Design

Perform adequate input validation against any value that influences the amount of memory that is allocated. Define an appropriate strategy for handling requests that exceed the limit, and consider supporting a configuration option so that the administrator can extend the amount of memory to be used if necessary.

Mitigation
Operation

Run your program using system-provided resource limits for memory. This might still cause the program to crash or exit, but the impact to the rest of the system will be minimized.
