GHSA-664H-WQGQ-64GW
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-24 16:22 – Updated: 2026-08-13 17:27Impact
What kind of vulnerability is it? Who is impacted?
Prototype pollution in update casting: passing a user-controlled update to a Mongoose update, like MyModel.updateOne(filter, req.body), can cause Mongoose to set $fullPath and $parentSchemaDocArray on Object.prototype.
Example:
const mongoose = require('mongoose');
console.log('before:', Object.prototype.$fullPath); // undefined
const User = mongoose.model('User', new mongoose.Schema({ name: String }));
const malicious = JSON.parse('{"$set":
anything"}}'); // attacker-controlled update
const q = User.updateOne({}, {});
try { q._castUpdate(malicious); } catch (e) { /* throws AFTER the pollution side-effect */ }
console.log('after :', Object.prototype.$fullPath); // "__proto__"
console.log('enumerable:', Object.prototype.propertyIsEnumerable('$fullPath')); // true
console.log('fresh {}:', ({}).$fullPath); // "__proto__"
Patches
Has the problem been patched? What versions should users upgrade to?
9.7.2, 8.24.1. 7.8.10, 6.13.10
Workarounds
Is there a way for users to fix or remediate the vulnerability without upgrading?
Check user-controlled updates for own __proto__ properties before passing to Mongoose

GHSA-679F-58PQ-4V2C
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-09-10 21:05 – Updated: 2026-09-10 21:05Impact
The Instance AI workflow summary built its result with get-or-create-then-nested-write idioms keyed by node names and connection keys taken from the stored workflow. Those are arbitrary strings: the restricted-name guard n8n shows in the editor is client-side and is bypassed by posting the workflow to the REST API directly. So a reserved key such as __proto__ resolved up the prototype chain instead of creating an own key, and the write landed on Object.prototype in the main n8n process, affecting every later request. The patch builds the summary with null-prototype accumulators and validates the keys it accepts, so reserved names cannot reach the prototype chain.
Patches
The issue has been fixed in n8n versions 2.37.7 and 2.38.2. Users should upgrade to one of these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability.
Workarounds
If upgrading is not immediately possible, administrators should consider the following temporary mitigations:
- Restrict n8n instance access to fully trusted users only.
- Remove or leave unconfigured the N8N_INSTANCE_AI_MODEL* environment variables to prevent the Instance AI module from reaching the vulnerable code path.
- Restart the n8n process to clear any in-memory prototype pollution if an attack is suspected.
These workarounds do not fully remediate the risk and should only be used as short-term mitigation measures.

GHSA-67C8-PQHQ-4RMX
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-10-01 15:03 – Updated: 2026-10-01 15:03Summary
A prototype-pollution gadget in ThreadPool.options allows an attacker who can pollute Object.prototype to execute arbitrary code in Piscina worker threads, invoke arbitrary functions during task scheduling, or inject environment variables into workers. The root cause is that ThreadPool.options is created as a plain object inheriting from Object.prototype, so any option without an explicit default in kDefaultOptions can be supplied via the prototype chain.
Details
In src/index.ts the ThreadPool constructor builds the resolved options object as a plain object:
this.options = { ...kDefaultOptions, ...options, filename, maxQueue: 0 }
Because this object has Object.prototype as its prototype, reads for properties that are not own properties of the object and are not present in kDefaultOptions fall back to Object.prototype. This means a prototype-pollution primitive (e.g. from a vulnerable merge() or JSON.parse merge elsewhere in the application) can inject values for execArgv, env, loadBalancer, argv, workerData, resourceLimits, niceIncrement, closeTimeout, recordTiming, stricterFIFO, workerHistogram, and trackUnmanagedFds.
The most serious gadget is execArgv, which is passed directly to new Worker(..., { execArgv }). An attacker can set Object.prototype.execArgv = ['--require', '/tmp/attacker.js'], causing every worker to preload and execute the attacker-controlled module on startup.
This issue survived the fix for GHSA-x9g3-xrwr-cwfg / CVE-2026-55388 ("Prototype Pollution Gadget → RCE via inherited options.filename"). That advisory hardened the Piscina constructor's filename read and run()'s filename/name reads, but ThreadPool.options itself was not created with a null prototype. The same class of attack is therefore still possible against any option without an explicit default in kDefaultOptions.
PoC
import { resolve } from 'node:path'
import Piscina from 'piscina'
Object.prototype.execArgv = ['--require', '/tmp/attacker.js']
const pool = new Piscina({
filename: resolve(import.meta.dirname, 'worker.js'),
minThreads: 1,
maxThreads: 1,
})
await pool.run(1)
/tmp/attacker.js is executed in the worker on startup. A full reproduction repository with execArgv, loadBalancer, and env vectors is available at https://github.com/Fcmam5/piscina-pp-poc.
Impact
- Remote Code Execution: via
execArgv(arbitrary--requiremodule preloaded in every worker on spawn). - Arbitrary code execution in the main thread: via
loadBalancer, an attacker-supplied function that is called during task scheduling. - Environment/CLI option injection: via
env, which is passed to each worker constructor. - Denial of Service / unexpected behavior: via other reachable options such as
workerData,resourceLimits,niceIncrement,closeTimeout,recordTiming, etc.
Anyone using Piscina in an application where Object.prototype can be polluted (e.g. through a dependency with a prototype-pollution vulnerability) is impacted.
### Summary

A prototype-pollution gadget in `ThreadPool.options` allows an attacker who can pollute `Object.prototype` to execute arbitrary code in Piscina worker threads, invoke arbitrary functions during task scheduling, or inject environment variables into workers. The root cause is that `ThreadPool.options` is created as a plain object inheriting from `Object.prototype`, so any option without an explicit default in `kDefaultOptions` can be supplied via the prototype chain.

### Details

In `src/index.ts` the `ThreadPool` constructor builds the resolved options object as a plain object:

```ts
this.options = { ...kDefaultOptions, ...options, filename, maxQueue: 0 }
```

Because this object has `Object.prototype` as its prototype, reads for properties that are not own properties of the object and are not present in `kDefaultOptions` fall back to `Object.prototype`. This means a prototype-pollution primitive (e.g. from a vulnerable `merge()` or `JSON.parse` merge elsewhere in the application) can inject values for `execArgv`, `env`, `loadBalancer`, `argv`, `workerData`, `resourceLimits`, `niceIncrement`, `closeTimeout`, `recordTiming`, `stricterFIFO`, `workerHistogram`, and `trackUnmanagedFds`.

The most serious gadget is `execArgv`, which is passed directly to `new Worker(..., { execArgv })`. An attacker can set `Object.prototype.execArgv = ['--require', '/tmp/attacker.js']`, causing every worker to preload and execute the attacker-controlled module on startup.

This issue survived the fix for **GHSA-x9g3-xrwr-cwfg / CVE-2026-55388** ("Prototype Pollution Gadget → RCE via inherited options.filename"). That advisory hardened the `Piscina` constructor's `filename` read and `run()`'s `filename`/`name` reads, but `ThreadPool.options` itself was not created with a null prototype. The same class of attack is therefore still possible against any option without an explicit default in `kDefaultOptions`.

### PoC

```js
import { resolve } from 'node:path'
import Piscina from 'piscina'
Object.prototype.execArgv = ['--require', '/tmp/attacker.js']
const pool = new Piscina({
filename: resolve(import.meta.dirname, 'worker.js'),
minThreads: 1,
maxThreads: 1,
})
await pool.run(1)
```

`/tmp/attacker.js` is executed in the worker on startup. A full reproduction repository with `execArgv`, `loadBalancer`, and `env` vectors is available at https://github.com/Fcmam5/piscina-pp-poc.

### Impact

- **Remote Code Execution**: via `execArgv` (arbitrary `--require` module preloaded in every worker on spawn).
- **Arbitrary code execution in the main thread**: via `loadBalancer`, an attacker-supplied function that is called during task scheduling.
- **Environment/CLI option injection**: via `env`, which is passed to each worker constructor.
- **Denial of Service / unexpected behavior**: via other reachable options such as `workerData`, `resourceLimits`, `niceIncrement`, `closeTimeout`, `recordTiming`, etc.

Anyone using Piscina in an application where `Object.prototype` can be polluted (e.g. through a dependency with a prototype-pollution vulnerability) is impacted.
Badger Database Prototype Pollution"
}
Mitigation
By freezing the object prototype first (for example, Object.freeze(Object.prototype)), modification of the prototype becomes impossible.
Mitigation
By blocking modifications of attributes that resolve to object prototype, such as proto or prototype, this weakness can be mitigated.
Mitigation
Strategy: Input Validation
When handling untrusted objects, validating using a schema can be used.
Mitigation
By using an object without prototypes (via Object.create(null) ), adding object prototype attributes by accessing the prototype via the special attributes becomes impossible, mitigating this weakness.
Mitigation
Map can be used instead of objects in most cases. If Map methods are used instead of object attributes, it is not possible to access the object prototype or modify it.
CAPEC-1: Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs
In applications, particularly web applications, access to functionality is mitigated by an authorization framework. This framework maps Access Control Lists (ACLs) to elements of the application's functionality; particularly URL's for web apps. In the case that the administrator failed to specify an ACL for a particular element, an attacker may be able to access it with impunity. An attacker with the ability to access functionality not properly constrained by ACLs can obtain sensitive information and possibly compromise the entire application. Such an attacker can access resources that must be available only to users at a higher privilege level, can access management sections of the application, or can run queries for data that they otherwise not supposed to.
CAPEC-180: Exploiting Incorrectly Configured Access Control Security Levels
An attacker exploits a weakness in the configuration of access controls and is able to bypass the intended protection that these measures guard against and thereby obtain unauthorized access to the system or network. Sensitive functionality should always be protected with access controls. However configuring all but the most trivial access control systems can be very complicated and there are many opportunities for mistakes. If an attacker can learn of incorrectly configured access security settings, they may be able to exploit this in an attack.
CAPEC-77: Manipulating User-Controlled Variables
This attack targets user controlled variables (DEBUG=1, PHP Globals, and So Forth). An adversary can override variables leveraging user-supplied, untrusted query variables directly used on the application server without any data sanitization. In extreme cases, the adversary can change variables controlling the business logic of the application. For instance, in languages like PHP, a number of poorly set default configurations may allow the user to override variables.
