CVE-2020-16876 — Windows Application Compatibility Client Library Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability

Affected: Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1803, Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1809, Microsoft Windows Server 2019, Microsoft Windows Server 2019 (Server Core installation), Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1909, Microsoft Windows Server, version 1909 (Server Core installation), Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1709 for 32-bit Systems, Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1709, Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1903 for 32-bit Systems, Microsoft Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems and 8 more

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when the Windows Application Compatibility Client Library improperly handles registry operations. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain elevated privileges.

To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would first need code execution on a victim system. An attacker could then run a specially crafted application.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by ensuring the Windows Application Compatibility Client Library properly handles registry operations.
