ALSA-2026:6053 — Moderate: kernel security update

Affected: AlmaLinux:10: kernel-abi-stablelists, AlmaLinux:10: kernel-doc

The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system.

Security Fix(es):

* kernel: kernel: Privilege escalation or denial of service via use-after-free in nf_tables_addchain() (CVE-2026-23231)
  * kernel: Linux kernel (qla2xxx): Double free vulnerability leads to denial of service and potential privilege escalation. (CVE-2025-71238)

For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

netfilter: nf_tables: fix use-after-free in nf_tables_addchain()

nf_tables_addchain() publishes the chain to table->chains via
list_add_tail_rcu() (in nft_chain_add()) before registering hooks.
If nf_tables_register_hook() then fails, the error path calls
nft_chain_del() (list_del_rcu()) followed by nf_tables_chain_destroy()
with no RCU grace period in between.

This creates two use-after-free conditions:

1) Control-plane: nf_tables_dump_chains() traverses table->chains
    under rcu_read_lock(). A concurrent dump can still be walking
    the chain when the error path frees it.

2) Packet path: for NFPROTO_INET, nf_register_net_hook() briefly
    installs the IPv4 hook before IPv6 registration fails. Packets
    entering nft_do_chain() via the transient IPv4 hook can still be
    dereferencing chain->blob_gen_X when the error path frees the
    chain.

Add synchronize_rcu() between nft_chain_del() and the chain destroy
so that all RCU readers -- both dump threads and in-flight packet
evaluation -- have finished before the chain is freed.

A vulnerability has been found in GNU elfutils 0.192 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __libdw_thread_tail in the library libdw_alloc.c of the component eu-readelf. The manipulation of the argument w leads to memory corruption. The attack can be initiated remotely. The complexity of an attack is rather high. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The name of the patch is 2636426a091bd6c6f7f02e49ab20d4cdc6bfc753. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue. A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GNU elfutils 0.192. This vulnerability affects the function elf_strptr in the library /libelf/elf_strptr.c of the component eu-strip. The manipulation leads to denial of service. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. The complexity of an attack is rather high. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The name of the patch is b16f441cca0a4841050e3215a9f120a6d8aea918. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue. A flaw was found in how GLib’s GString manages memory when adding data to strings. If a string is already very large, combining it with more input can cause a hidden overflow in the size calculation. Security Fix(es):

f2fs: fix to detect potential corrupted nid in free_nid_list

As reported, on-disk footer.ino and footer.nid is the same and
out-of-range, let's add sanity check on f2fs_alloc_nid() to detect
any potential corruption in free_nid_list.(CVE-2025-68315)

Fix uninit errors caused after buffer allocation given to 'de'; by

UBUNTU-CVE-2026-23231

Affected: Ubuntu:16.04:LTS: linux-hwe-edge, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-aws-5.0, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-aws-5.3, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-azure, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-azure-5.3, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-azure-edge, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-gcp, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-gcp-5.3, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-gke-4.15, Ubuntu:18.04:LTS: linux-gke-5.4 and 140 more

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_tables: fix use-after-free in nf_tables_addchain() nf_tables_addchain() publishes the chain to table->chains via list_add_tail_rcu() (in nft_chain_add()) before registering hooks. If nf_tables_register_hook() then fails, the error path calls nft_chain_del() (list_del_rcu()) followed by nf_tables_chain_destroy() with no RCU grace period in between. This creates two use-after-free conditions: 1) Control-plane: nf_tables_dump_chains() traverses table->chains under rcu_read_lock(). A concurrent dump can still be walking the chain when the error path frees it. 2) Packet path: for NFPROTO_INET, nf_register_net_hook() briefly installs the IPv4 hook before IPv6 registration fails. Packets entering nft_do_chain() via the transient IPv4 hook can still be dereferencing chain->blob_gen_X when the error path frees the chain. Add synchronize_rcu() between nft_chain_del() and the chain destroy so that all RCU readers -- both dump threads and in-flight packet evaluation -- have finished before the chain is freed.
