CVE-2023-2908 — Libtiff: null pointer dereference in tif_dir.c

Affected: Libtiff, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, Fedora

A null pointer dereference issue was found in Libtiff's tif_dir.c file. This issue may allow an attacker to pass a crafted TIFF image file to the tiffcp utility which triggers a runtime error that causes undefined behavior. This will result in an application crash, eventually leading to a denial of service.

USN-6290-1 — tiff vulnerabilities

Affected: Ubuntu:Pro:14.04:LTS: tiff, Ubuntu:Pro:16.04:LTS: tiff, Ubuntu:Pro:18.04:LTS: tiff, Ubuntu:20.04:LTS: tiff, Ubuntu:22.04:LTS: tiff

It was discovered that LibTIFF could be made to write out of bounds when
processing certain malformed image files with the tiffcrop utility. If a
user were tricked into opening a specially crafted image file, an attacker
could possibly use this issue to cause tiffcrop to crash, resulting in a
denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code. This issue only
affected Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
