ALSA-2023:3837 — Moderate: systemd security and bug fix update

Affected: AlmaLinux:8: systemd, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-container, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-devel, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-journal-remote, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-libs, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-pam, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-tests, AlmaLinux:8: systemd-udev

The systemd packages contain systemd, a system and service manager for Linux, compatible with the SysV and LSB init scripts. It provides aggressive parallelism capabilities, uses socket and D-Bus activation for starting services, offers on-demand starting of daemons, and keeps track of processes using Linux cgroups. In addition, it supports snapshotting and restoring of the system state, maintains mount and automount points, and implements an elaborate transactional dependency-based service control logic. It can also work as a drop-in replacement for sysvinit.

Security Fix(es):

* systemd: privilege escalation via the less pager (CVE-2023-26604)

For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Bug Fix(es):

* systemd-pstore crashes when attempting to move standalone files out of /sys/fs/pstore (BZ#2190153)

NOTE: it could be argued that because expat already provides the ability to disable external entity expansion, the responsibility for resolving this issue lies with application developers; according to this argument, this entry should be REJECTed, and each affected application would need its own CVE. shadow: TOCTOU (time-of-check time-of-use) race condition when copying and removing directory trees run-mailcap in the Debian mime-support package before 3.52-1+deb7u1 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a filename.
