Details

A specially-crafted file can cause libjxl's decoder to read pixel data from uninitialized (but allocated) memory.

This can be done by causing the decoder to reference an outside-image-bound area in a subsequent patches. An incorrect optimization causes the decoder to omit populating those areas.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-10-01 09:30 – Updated: 2025-12-12 21:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

arm64: kexec: initialize kexec_buf struct in load_other_segments()

Patch series "kexec: Fix invalid field access".

The kexec_buf structure was previously declared without initialization. commit bf454ec31add ("kexec_file: allow to place kexec_buf randomly") added a field that is always read but not consistently populated by all architectures. This un-initialized field will contain garbage.

This is also triggering a UBSAN warning when the uninitialized data was accessed:

------------[ cut here ]------------
UBSAN: invalid-load in ./include/linux/kexec.h:210:10
load of value 252 is not a valid value for type '_Bool'

Zero-initializing kexec_buf at declaration ensures all fields are cleanly set, preventing future instances of uninitialized memory being used.

An initial fix was already landed for arm64[0], and this patchset fixes the problem on the remaining arm64 code and on riscv, as raised by Mark.

Discussions about this problem could be found at[1][2].

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

efi: libstub: only free priv.runtime_map when allocated

priv.runtime_map is only allocated when efi_novamap is not set. Otherwise, it is an uninitialized value. In the error path, it is freed unconditionally. Avoid passing an uninitialized value to free_pool. Free priv.runtime_map only when it was allocated.

This bug was discovered and resolved using Coverity Static Analysis Security Testing (SAST) by Synopsys, Inc.

Summary
columnar: Read on uninitialized buffer may cause UB (ColumnarReadExt::read_typed_vec())
Details

Affected versions of this crate passes an uninitialized buffer to a user-provided Read implementation (ColumnarReadExt::read_typed_vec()).

Arbitrary Read implementations can read from the uninitialized buffer (memory exposure) and also can return incorrect number of bytes written to the buffer. Reading from uninitialized memory produces undefined values that can quickly invoke undefined behavior.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-06-19 15:30 – Updated: 2025-09-17 21:30

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

drm/mediatek: Init ddp_comp with devm_kcalloc()

In the case where conn_routes is true we allocate an extra slot in the ddp_comp array but mtk_drm_crtc_create() never seemed to initialize it in the test case I ran. For me, this caused a later crash when we looped through the array in mtk_drm_crtc_mode_valid(). This showed up for me when I booted with slub_debug=FZPUA which poisons the memory initially. Without slub_debug I couldn't reproduce, presumably because the later code handles the value being NULL and in most cases (not guaranteed in all cases) the memory the allocator returned started out as 0.

It really doesn't hurt to initialize the array with devm_kcalloc() since the array is small and the overhead of initting a handful of elements to 0 is small. In general initting memory to zero is a safer practice and usually it's suggested to only use the non-initting alloc functions if you really need to.

Let's switch the function to use an allocation function that zeros the memory. For me, this avoids the crash.

Mitigation
Implementation

Explicitly initialize the resource before use. If this is performed through an API function or standard procedure, follow all required steps.

Mitigation
Implementation

Pay close attention to complex conditionals that affect initialization, since some branches might not perform the initialization.

Mitigation
Implementation

Avoid race conditions (CWE-362) during initialization routines.

Mitigation
Build and Compilation

Run or compile the product with settings that generate warnings about uninitialized variables or data.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
