Allowed

UNIX Symbolic Link (Symlink) Following

Abstraction: Compound · Status: Incomplete

The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files.

GHSA-6GCG-HP2X-Q54H

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-23 21:13 – Updated: 2022-05-23 21:13

Summary
Symlink following allows leaking out-of-bound manifests and JSON files from Argo CD repo-server
Details

Impact

All unpatched versions of Argo CD starting with v0.7.0 are vulnerable to a symlink following bug allowing a malicious user with repository write access to leak sensitive files from Argo CD's repo-server.

A malicious Argo CD user with write access for a repository which is (or may be) used in a directory-type Application may commit a symlink which points to an out-of-bounds file. * If the target file is a valid JSON or YAML manifest file, and the resource is allowed in the Application, the attacker can read the contents of that manifest file. (In versions <2.3.2, <2.2.8, and <2.1.14, the attacker may read the files contents even if the resource is not allowed in the Application). * If the target file is valid JSON but is not a manifest file, the attacker may read the contents of the file. * If the target file is not valid JSON or YAML, the attacker may read partial file contents (usually just the first character of the file).

Sensitive files which could be leaked include manifest files from other Applications' source repositories (potentially decrypted files, if you are using a decryption plugin) or any JSON-formatted secrets which have been mounted as files on the repo-server.

Patches

A patch for this vulnerability has been released in the following Argo CD versions:

  • v2.3.4
  • v2.2.9
  • v2.1.15

Workarounds

  • If you are using >=v2.3.0 and do not have any Jsonnet/directory-type Applications, disable the Jsonnet/directory config management tool. The config key is called jsonnet.enable since the same build tool is used for both Jsonnet and plain-manifest ("directory") sources.

Mitigations

  • Avoid mounting JSON-formatted secrets as files on the repo-server.
  • Upgrade to >=2.3.0 to significantly reduce the risk of leaking out-of-bounds manifest files. Starting with 2.3.0, repository paths are randomized, and read permissions are restricted when manifests are not being actively being generated. This makes it very difficult to craft and use a malicious symlink.
  • Upgrade to >=2.3.3, >=2.2.8, or >= 2.1.14 to significantly reduce the risk of leaking the contents of (but not the existence of) out-of-bounds manifest files. These versions prevent attackers from loading manifests which are not permitted in the Project which governs the Application.

Best practices which can mitigate risk

  • Limit who has push access to manifest repositories.
  • Limit who is allowed to configure new source repositories.
  • Limit resource kinds and destinations allowed for Projects, and restrict user access to only the necessary Projects.

Credits

This vulnerability was originally discovered as part of the Trail of Bits audit, published March 12, 2021. The behavior was left unchanged at the time.

The vulnerability was independently re-discovered by @crenshaw-dev, who contributed the patch. A security audit by Ada Logics independently followed up on the Trail of Bits report around the same time.

Summary
Kubernetes kubectl cp Vulnerable to Symlink Attack
Details

The Kubernetes kubectl cp command in versions 1.1-1.12, and versions prior to 1.13.11, 1.14.7, and 1.15.4 allows a combination of two symlinks provided by tar output of a malicious container to place a file outside of the destination directory specified in the kubectl cp invocation. This could be used to allow an attacker to place a nefarious file using a symlink, outside of the destination tree.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-09-24 19:15 – Updated: 2026-09-24 19:15

Summary
Language Servers for AWS vulnerable to arbitrary file write
Details

Summary

Language Servers for AWS (the aws/language-servers project) provides the Language Server Protocol implementations that power AWS developer tooling, including the Amazon Q Developer agentic chat experience, across IDEs such as VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, and Eclipse.

Missing symlink validation in Language Servers for AWS may allow an arbitrary file write outside of the workspace trust boundary. This may occur when a local user opens a workspace containing a maliciously crafted symlink that resolves to a file path outside the workspace trust boundary.

Impact

If a user opens a maliciously crafted workspace containing a symlink that resides within the workspace but resolves to a location outside the workspace trust boundary, the agent may follow that symlink and write to the external location without prompting the user for approval. This can result in the modification of files outside the intended workspace boundary.

This issue is triggered when a user opens a workspace, trusts it, and the agent subsequently writes to a path within that workspace.

Impacted versions: Language Servers for AWS version <1.69.0.

Patches

This issue has been addressed in AWS Language Servers version 1.69.0. We recommend upgrading to the latest version and ensuring any forked or derivative code is patched to incorporate the new fixes.

Workarounds

No workarounds are available.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-11-15 18:30 – Updated: 2024-11-15 18:30
VLAI
Details

Three vulnerabilities in the CLI of Cisco TelePresence CE and RoomOS could allow an authenticated, local attacker to overwrite arbitrary files on the local file system of an affected device.

These vulnerabilities are due to improper access controls on files that are on the local file system. An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by placing a symbolic link in a specific location on the local file system of an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to overwrite arbitrary files on the affected device. To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need to have a remote support user account. Note: CVE-2023-20092 does not affect Cisco DX70, DX80, TelePresence MX Series, or TelePresence SX Series devices. Cisco has released software updates that address these vulnerabilities. There are no workarounds that address these vulnerabilities.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-01-28 17:29 – Updated: 2025-02-18 22:36

Summary
Insecure Temporary File usage in github.com/golang/glog
Details

When logs are written to a widely-writable directory (the default), an unprivileged attacker may predict a privileged process's log file path and pre-create a symbolic link to a sensitive file in its place. When that privileged process runs, it will follow the planted symlink and overwrite that sensitive file. To fix that, glog now causes the program to exit (with status code 2) when it finds that the configured log file already exists.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-28 22:23 – Updated: 2026-07-28 22:23
VLAI
Summary
skilo add follows symbolic links, allowing arbitrary local file disclosure from a malicious skill source
Details

Impact

skilo add installs a skill by recursively copying the skill directory into the target skills directory. The copy routine (copy_dir_all) classified each entry with std::fs::DirEntry::file_type() — which does not follow symlinks — and then copied non-directory entries with std::fs::copy(), which does dereference symlinks.

As a result, a skill containing a symbolic link such as reference.txt -> /home/<user>/.ssh/id_rsa was copied as a regular file whose contents are the link's target. A malicious skill source — for example a git repository installed via skilo add github.com/<attacker>/<skills>, or a local path — could read arbitrary files readable by the user running skilo add (SSH keys, cloud credentials, .env files, etc.) and place their contents inside the installed skill directory, where the user or their agent may later read, share, or sync them.

This is arbitrary local file disclosure (CWE-59 / CWE-61, symlink following) triggered by installing an untrusted skills source.

Patches

Fixed in 0.11.1. copy_dir_all now rejects symbolic-link entries at any recursion depth (failing closed with a dedicated error) instead of dereferencing them.

Workarounds

  • Only install skills from sources you trust.
  • Inspect a skill source for symbolic links before running skilo add.

Affected versions

Introduced together with the skilo add command in 0.5.0 and present through 0.11.0. Releases before 0.5.0 do not include the add command.

Mitigation
Implementation

Symbolic link attacks often occur when a program creates a tmp directory that stores files/links. Access to the directory should be restricted to the program as to prevent attackers from manipulating the files.

Mitigation MIT-48.1
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Separation of Privilege

  • Follow the principle of least privilege when assigning access rights to entities in a software system.
  • Denying access to a file can prevent an attacker from replacing that file with a link to a sensitive file. Ensure good compartmentalization in the system to provide protected areas that can be trusted.
CAPEC-27: Leveraging Race Conditions via Symbolic Links

This attack leverages the use of symbolic links (Symlinks) in order to write to sensitive files. An attacker can create a Symlink link to a target file not otherwise accessible to them. When the privileged program tries to create a temporary file with the same name as the Symlink link, it will actually write to the target file pointed to by the attackers' Symlink link. If the attacker can insert malicious content in the temporary file they will be writing to the sensitive file by using the Symlink. The race occurs because the system checks if the temporary file exists, then creates the file. The attacker would typically create the Symlink during the interval between the check and the creation of the temporary file.
