Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

11157 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Foxit PDF Editor Highlight Annotation Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Foxit PDF Editor. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the handling of Annotation objects. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-14358.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-06-18 12:30 – Updated: 2025-11-14 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

dma-buf/dma-resv: check if the new fence is really later

Previously when we added a fence to a dma_resv object we always assumed the the newer than all the existing fences.

With Jason's work to add an UAPI to explicit export/import that's not necessary the case any more. So without this check we would allow userspace to force the kernel into an use after free error.

Since the change is very small and defensive it's probably a good idea to backport this to stable kernels as well just in case others are using the dma_resv object in the same way.

The UAF is because:

mount(pid: 921) cifsd(pid: 923)
cifs_demultiplex_thread
SMB2_negotiate
cifs_send_recv
compound_send_recv
smb_send_rqst
wait_for_response
wait_event_state [1]
standard_receive3
cifs_handle_standard
handle_mid
mid->resp_buf = buf; [2]
dequeue_mid [3]
KILL the process [4]
resp_iov[i].iov_base = buf
free_rsp_buf [5]
is_network_name_deleted [6]
callback
  1. After send request to server, wait the response until mid->mid_state != SUBMITTED;
  2. Receive response from server, and set it to mid;
  3. Set the mid state to RECEIVED;
  4. Kill the process, the mid state already RECEIVED, get 0;
  5. Handle and release the negotiate response;
  6. UAF.

It can be easily reproduce with add some delay in [3] - [6].

Only sync call has the problem since async call's callback is executed in cifsd process.

Add an extra state to mark the mid state to READY before wakeup the waitter, then it can get the resp safely.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
