"value": "\u003cp\u003ejackson-databind binds a JSON string to a javax.xml.datatype.Duration or javax.xml.datatype.XMLGregorianCalendar field by passing the raw string verbatim to DatatypeFactory.newDuration(value) or newXMLGregorianCalendar(value) in CoreXMLDeserializers.Std._deserialize. These deserializers are registered by default with no opt-in, so a plain ObjectMapper or JsonMapper with no polymorphic typing and no special configuration reaches this path. The XML Schema lexical grammar permits numeric components of arbitrary length, which the JDK materializes through the native BigInteger(String) and BigDecimal(String) constructors, both quadratic in digit count. Because the digits sit inside a JSON string token rather than a JSON number token, jackson-core\u0027s StreamReadConstraints.maxNumberLength guard never applies; jackson\u0027s own NumberDeserializers call validateIntegerLength or validateFPLength before parsing a stringified number, but the XML datatype deserializer omits that pre-check. An unauthenticated attacker can therefore submit a single request of a few megabytes, such as a Duration value consisting of the letter P followed by several million digits and the letter Y, and force tens of seconds to several minutes of single-threaded CPU work; a handful of concurrent requests can saturate a server\u0027s worker threads. This affects com.fasterxml.jackson.core:jackson-databind from 2.0.0 before 2.18.10, from 2.19.0 before 2.21.6, and from 2.22.0 before 2.22.2, and tools.jackson.core:jackson-databind from 3.0.0 before 3.1.6 and from 3.2.0 before 3.2.2. SmileParser._handleLongFieldName() grows its internal name buffer through an unconstrained _growArrayTo() call and performs no length validation. An attacker who can have a Smile document parsed may therefore embed a single property name of unbounded length; the parser buffers the whole name in memory before returning it, whatever maxNameLength is configured to. Because StreamReadConstraints.maxDocumentLength is also disabled by default, nothing else bounds the name under default settings, so the only limits are the attacker\u0027s upload capacity and available heap, leading to memory exhaustion and denial of service. No privileges beyond the ability to submit data to a parsing endpoint are required, and exploitation needs only that the bytes reach SmileFactory parsing, directly or through an ObjectMapper configured with the Smile module. jackson-core\u0027s own JSON parsers enforce maxNameLength incrementally during name decoding; this gap is specific to the binary formats. maxNameLength and validateNameLength were introduced in jackson-core 2.16.0, so releases before 2.16.0 do not contain the constraint that is left unenforced. This issue is tracked together with the CBOR parser defect in the same vendor advisory, GHSA-3v8f-v6vx-fmrm, which covers both binary formats. Prior to 1.30.4, Mailpit decodes attacker-supplied image attachments into a full raster before checking decoded dimensions, pixel count, or memory use in the GET /api/v1/message/{id}/part/{partID}/thumb endpoint. The Thumbnail handler in server/apiv1/thumbnails.go obtains attachment bytes through storage.GetAttachmentPart(), accepts image/* content, and calls imaging.Decode() with AutoOrientation before imaging.Fill() scales the image to 180 by 120 pixels. A compact image declaring very large dimensions can therefore consume disproportionately large memory and CPU, and opening the message UI can trigger the same endpoint through server/ui-src/components/message/MessageAttachments.vue. This can degrade availability when an unauthenticated client can store the crafted attachment and reach the web API. This issue is fixed in version 1.30.4."

An unauthenticated remote SMTP client can send an oversized single command line that is fully allocated before syntax rejection or timeout, and the normal MaxMessageSize and DATA limits do not apply to this pre-DATA path. The same command reader is used by handleAuthLogin(), handleAuthPlain(), and handleAuthCramMD5() continuation lines, so concurrent oversized inputs can create memory pressure and reduce service availability. This issue is fixed in version 1.30.4."

From 4.2.0 until 4.2.9 and 4.3.3, the Shovel parameter parser converted attacker-controlled runtime parameter values into non-garbage-collected Erlang atoms before bounding them or checking a fixed allowlist. Exploitation requires network access to the Management HTTP API, valid credentials with both the management and policymaker tags, permission to set Shovel runtime parameters on a vhost, and the rabbitmq_shovel and rabbitmq_shovel_management plugins to be enabled. The attacker can exhaust the node-wide atom table and deny service, and malicious parameters are stored durably and reparsed when workers start, so atom pressure can recur after restart without a live attacker connection. This issue is fixed in versions 4.2.9 and 4.3.3."

From 4.1.0 until 4.3.3, 4.2.9, and 4.1.11, Stream Management Super-Stream Binding Keys Allocation Allows Low-Privilege Node Denial of Service. rabbitMQ 4.3.1 with rabbitmqstreammanagement enabled accepts PUT /api/stream/super-streams/{vhost}/{name} requests from an authenticated management user that can access the target vhost. When the request body contains the binding-keys field, the handler parses the attacker-controlled comma-separated string and builds the full stream-name list before checking whether the user has permission to configure the resulting streams. A low-privileged management user with vhost access but no configure, write, or read permission can therefore force large transient allocations before the resource permission check. In a 768 MB memory-limited container, one HTTP PUT with about 4.5 MB of JSON body killed the RabbitMQ container with Docker state exited true An authenticated low-privileged management user can kill a memory-limited RabbitMQ node with one HTTP This issue is fixed in versions 4.3.3, 4.2.9, and 4.1.11."

Mitigation
Design throttling mechanisms into the system architecture. The best protection is to limit the amount of resources that an unauthorized user can cause to be expended. A strong authentication and access control model will help prevent such attacks from occurring in the first place. The login application should be protected against DoS attacks as much as possible. Limiting the database access, perhaps by caching result sets, can help minimize the resources expended. To further limit the potential for a DoS attack, consider tracking the rate of requests received from users and blocking requests that exceed a defined rate threshold.
Mitigation
- Mitigation of resource exhaustion attacks requires that the target system either:
- The first of these solutions is an issue in itself though, since it may allow attackers to prevent the use of the system by a particular valid user. If the attacker impersonates the valid user, they may be able to prevent the user from accessing the server in question.
- The second solution is simply difficult to effectively institute -- and even when properly done, it does not provide a full solution. It simply makes the attack require more resources on the part of the attacker.
- recognizes the attack and denies that user further access for a given amount of time, or
- uniformly throttles all requests in order to make it more difficult to consume resources more quickly than they can again be freed.
Mitigation
Ensure that protocols have specific limits of scale placed on them.
Mitigation
Ensure that all failures in resource allocation place the system into a safe posture.
CAPEC-147: XML Ping of the Death
An attacker initiates a resource depletion attack where a large number of small XML messages are delivered at a sufficiently rapid rate to cause a denial of service or crash of the target. Transactions such as repetitive SOAP transactions can deplete resources faster than a simple flooding attack because of the additional resources used by the SOAP protocol and the resources necessary to process SOAP messages. The transactions used are immaterial as long as they cause resource utilization on the target. In other words, this is a normal flooding attack augmented by using messages that will require extra processing on the target.
CAPEC-227: Sustained Client Engagement
An adversary attempts to deny legitimate users access to a resource by continually engaging a specific resource in an attempt to keep the resource tied up as long as possible. The adversary's primary goal is not to crash or flood the target, which would alert defenders; rather it is to repeatedly perform actions or abuse algorithmic flaws such that a given resource is tied up and not available to a legitimate user. By carefully crafting a requests that keep the resource engaged through what is seemingly benign requests, legitimate users are limited or completely denied access to the resource.
CAPEC-492: Regular Expression Exponential Blowup
An adversary may execute an attack on a program that uses a poor Regular Expression(Regex) implementation by choosing input that results in an extreme situation for the Regex. A typical extreme situation operates at exponential time compared to the input size. This is due to most implementations using a Nondeterministic Finite Automaton(NFA) state machine to be built by the Regex algorithm since NFA allows backtracking and thus more complex regular expressions.
