GHSA-GW55-JM4H-X339
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2020-05-08 18:54 – Updated: 2021-10-08 19:56The Java-WebSocket Client does not perform hostname verification.
- This means that SSL certificates of other hosts are accepted as long as they are trusted. To exploit this vulnerability an attacker has to perform a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack between a Java application using the Java-WebSocket Client and an WebSocket server it's connecting to.
- TLS normally protects users and systems against MITM attacks, it cannot if certificates from other trusted hosts are accepted by the client.
For more information see: CWE-297: Improper Validation of Certificate with Host Mismatch - https://cwe.mitre.org/data/definitions/297.html
Important note
The OWASP Dependency-Check (https://jeremylong.github.io/DependencyCheck/index.html) may report that a dependency of your project is affected by this security vulnerability, but you don't use this lib. This is caused by the fuzzy search in the OWASP implementation. Check out this issue (https://github.com/TooTallNate/Java-WebSocket/issues/1019#issuecomment-628507934) for more information and a way to suppress the warning.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-08-31 00:31 – Updated: 2024-11-13 18:52A flaw was found in Kroxylicious. When establishing the connection with the upstream Kafka server using a TLS secured connection, Kroxylicious fails to properly verify the server's hostname, resulting in an insecure connection. For a successful attack to be performed, the attacker needs to perform a Man-in-the-Middle attack or compromise any external systems, such as DNS or network routing configuration. This issue is considered a high complexity attack, with additional high privileges required, as the attack would need access to the Kroxylicious configuration or a peer system. The result of a successful attack impacts both data integrity and confidentiality.

GHSA-JM94-9F7H-36PR
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-03 09:31 – Updated: 2026-07-06 21:30When a user invokes curl using a schemeless URL combined with
--proto-default sftp (or scp), a disconnect occurs between the tool layer
and libcurl. The tool layer incorrectly infers the URL scheme, which
erroneously bypasses the initialization of critical SSH security options like
CURLOPT_SSH_HOST_PUBLIC_KEY_SHA256 and CURLOPT_SSH_KNOWNHOSTS. Conversely, the
libcurl runtime successfully honors CURLOPT_DEFAULT_PROTOCOL and establishes
the connection via SFTP/SCP as specified. Because the tool layer skipped the
security configuration, these SSH host verification options are silently
omitted, causing curl to connect to an unverified SSH remote host without
throwing an error.

"details": "When a user invokes curl using a schemeless URL combined with\n`--proto-default` sftp (or scp), a disconnect occurs between the tool layer\nand libcurl. The tool layer incorrectly infers the URL scheme, which\nerroneously bypasses the initialization of critical SSH security options like\nCURLOPT_SSH_HOST_PUBLIC_KEY_SHA256 and CURLOPT_SSH_KNOWNHOSTS. Conversely, the\nlibcurl runtime successfully honors CURLOPT_DEFAULT_PROTOCOL and establishes\nthe connection via SFTP/SCP as specified. Because the tool layer skipped the\nsecurity configuration, these SSH host verification options are silently\nomitted, causing curl to connect to an unverified SSH remote host without\nthrowing an error.",

Mitigation
Fully check the hostname of the certificate and provide the user with adequate information about the nature of the problem and how to proceed.
Mitigation
If certificate pinning is being used, ensure that all relevant properties of the certificate are fully validated before the certificate is pinned, including the hostname.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
