CWE-289
AllowedAuthentication Bypass by Alternate Name
Abstraction: Base · Status: Incomplete
The product performs authentication based on the name of a resource being accessed, or the name of the actor performing the access, but it does not properly check all possible names for that resource or actor.
81 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

"value": "The Classified Listing - Mobile Number Verification plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Authentication Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.6.0. This is due to missing server-side Firebase OTP validation in the process_otp_login() function. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to authenticate as any user with a phone number registered in the plugin\u0027s phone table by submitting an arbitrary OTP code and UID through the Firebase OTP login flow. Successful exploitation requires OTP login to be enabled with Firebase selected as the verification gateway, and requires the attacker to know or guess the target account\u0027s registered phone number. Administrator account takeover is possible if an administrator account has a phone number registered in the plugin."

"value": "The MyHome Core plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Authentication Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 4.4.5. This is due to missing authorization in the send_link() AJAX handler and improper token validation in the activate() function. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to generate an activation token for an unconfirmed user account and obtain a valid authentication cookie for that account, including administrators. Successful exploitation requires the MyHome theme to be configured in legacy/WPBakery mode with frontend registration and confirmation email enabled, and the target account must not already have the myhome_agent_confirmed user meta set."

The plaintext key stored in `wp_usermeta` can be used with the plugin\u0027s custom reset action to set a new password for any user. Combined with another vulnerability such as SQL Injection (CVE-2026-9700), this makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract the plaintext reset key and take over any user account, including administrators. Mitigation MIT-44
Strategy: Input Validation
Avoid making decisions based on names of resources (e.g. files) if those resources can have alternate names.
Mitigation MIT-5
Strategy: Input Validation
- Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
- When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
- Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
Mitigation MIT-20
Strategy: Input Validation
Inputs should be decoded and canonicalized to the application's current internal representation before being validated (CWE-180). Make sure that the application does not decode the same input twice (CWE-174). Such errors could be used to bypass allowlist validation schemes by introducing dangerous inputs after they have been checked.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
